Visitor Reseach

In Cullen Community is Key

David McCubbin of Discover Cullen champions community and tourism.

In Cullen, community is key. Whether it’s local residents, the business community or community groups, so much of what takes place is led by the community, for the benefit of both residents and visitors.

Community groups are long-established, well supported and deliver a wide range of activity—from the creation and maintenance of footpaths to the operation of public spaces, a community and residential centre, sea school, grass cutting, public garden maintenance, a heritage centre, beach cleans, events and the tourist information office.

Tourism is one of the key economic sectors in the village, and communities are being empowered through tourism by making Cullen a better place to live, work and visit.

Volunteering is a very strong part of the community, with a significant amount of that time dedicated to supporting tourism.

The beach cleans organised by Discover Cullen are a great example. Many visitors come to enjoy the mile-long sandy beach, and these efforts help care for this important asset. They also bring added benefits—providing a social opportunity to meet new people, a form of exercise that’s good for both mind and body, and a chance to give something back to the community.

At Cullen Tourist Office, volunteers welcome almost 4,000 visitors each year. This not only enhances the visitor experience but also creates a real sense of pride and satisfaction for those involved.

Cullen is also home to not just one, not two, but three sets of public toilets—all managed by volunteers and supported through locally raised funds.

Much of the visitor experience in Cullen is delivered by the community itself, reflected in the consistent feedback describing Cullen as a welcoming and friendly place.

The majority of businesses in Cullen are independently run by local residents. The town has a strong entrepreneurial spirit, making the most of the opportunities created by tourism footfall.
