Tourism That Works for Everyone:

A West Belfast Perspective

Eimear Hargey Heritage Development Manager, Fáilte Feirste Thiar gives a West Belfast Perspective on community tourism.

Fáilte Feirste Thiar, which translates as “Welcome to West Belfast”, took the opportunity arising from peace to develop the West Belfast tourism product and to harness tourism as a driver of local regeneration, pride of place and economic growth.

At Fáilte Feirste Thiar, we’ve always believed that tourism works best when it’s shaped by the community itself. This year’s theme for Community Tourism Day, “Everyone Can Empower Communities Through Tourism”, speaks directly to the heart of what we do.

For many, tourism is about ticking places off a list. But here, it’s different. Visitors come to West Belfast not just to see, but to understand—to hear firsthand accounts, to experience culture that’s alive and thriving, and to connect with a place that has a powerful story to tell. That kind of experience doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built on trust, authenticity and the willingness of a community to open its doors.

Tourism allows local voices to shape how West Belfast is understood by the world. Instead of being defined by others, our community defines itself—through its history, culture, creativity and warm welcome.

When visitors choose community-led experiences, they are directly contributing to local livelihoods. Visitor attractions, artists, guides, small businesses and social enterprises all benefit. That impact doesn’t disappear—it’s reinvested back into the community, supporting jobs, opportunities for young people, and helping to fund grassroots initiatives that make a real difference on the ground.

But empowerment isn’t just about economics. It’s about ownership of stories. It’s about representation. It’s about ensuring that the story of West Belfast is told by those who know it best—the people who live here.

As we mark Community Tourism Day, we reaffirm our commitment to a model of tourism that puts community first—a model that is inclusive, sustainable and rooted in place.

As we look ahead, our focus remains the same: ensuring that tourism continues to benefit the people of West Belfast, while offering visitors an experience that is honest, meaningful and unforgettable.

We believe that everyone has a role to play in shaping that future. Whether you are a visitor, a local resident or a supporter from afar, your choices matter.

Together, we can ensure that tourism continues to empower communities—not just in West Belfast, but everywhere.
